──Terry tempest williams

Theme of the Year

Sounds of the Fields-Symphony from the Wetlands

What stories do we tell that evoke a sense of the fields
Terry Tempest Williams

Although sounds are shapeless and formless, as you close your eyes and listen intently, a field of life is created; a scene that once was is regenerated. The question is, what sounds evoke the sense and sentiment of wetlands among people?

Mythologies are passed down through millenniums through sounds. These ancient sounds transcend space and time. They have never left us. What is the mythology of wetlands? Between the saline and fresh water; between cities and nature; between life and death, layers of different vibrations and fusion of varying wavelengths meet on the sound bridge between the mankind and nature. As artists and musicians construct and deconstruct, infusing the soundscape into the landscape, the result is a creation that spans across multiple disciplines. A new poem is being composed in this year's Guandu International Nature Art Festival; a different scape is being presented. The sounds and mythologies that are uniquely for the wetlands of Guandu are being created. This is a beginning; an experimental exhibition; a boundless creation within bounds.

Between sound and place, space is being generated by the artworks themselves.

Lying within the space is the sound of place.

Between sound and soundscape; between sound and nature;

between sound and artwork

is void.

What kind of place would be created?

What kind of music would be engendered?

What kind of scape would be perceived?

Sound, place.
